Second Coming No. 565 — August 7, 2026
A poem-a-day protest against the threat posed to our democracy by Donald Trump and his fascist regime
Sarah Dickenson Snyder
This President
The more we know about him,
the more something sinks in me
like a toxic stone, gravity
pulling a darkness closer.
I’d like to change him,
maybe place some potion
in his eyes and he’ll wake
and realize how to be kind,
a you-must-change-your-life
moment.
He’ll start buying big turkeys
for poor families,
“the biggest ones they have!”
A new, wonderful life.
Oh, I wish we were in a rom-com
where everything works out
just how you want it to,
even if you have to wait
for decades
as Penelope did.

Wishful, sweet. Until I remembered Hitler. This poem took me on a voyage.
